Hi Sambit:

Ans1: Chances of getting assistantship during admission are very meek. You can try for funding once you get here and approach the Prof. whose area of expertise match you skills. Since you have a computer science background with good experience, you have chances of getting an aid after some initial background research.
My advice is to go thru the website and shortlist Profs who are working in your specific area of interest.
Contact them through emails (persevere) and if possible give them a call and discuss your situation.

Praveen

Dear Sambit,

Now that your question is specific, I am forwarding your email to a person in the Electrical Engineering Department and he should be able to answer all your questions.

Thanks for writing to ISA and I hope we can help you out in everything that you need.

Regards
Ankur

Hi Ankur,
Thank you for yoyr reply. I checked the FAQ webpage again and I found out enough info about living costs and general funding scenario. I should have checked that thoroughly yesterday. Siorry for that.
I still haven't found answers to the following questions:
1) I wanted to know the chances of getting an assistantsip of some sort in the Electrical Engineering department. I know its very difficult but has the situation changed? I mean is there any chance of getting a funding during admission in the university? When do they let people know about funding decisions? I have already received an admissions letter but nothing about funding still.
2)And if the chances of getting any funding during admission is very rare , is is there any possibility of getting any funding from the department once you arrive there . And does experience help(I have close to 4 years of software experience)?
Sorry for the trouble again
Regards
Sambit

Once you are in US, the entire country is open to your job applications. You can get a job anywhere in US even if you are in Detroit. However many companies (small companies and not MNC's) prefer local candidates. Hence people tend to look for univs which are in Chicago, New York or California, as there are tons of IT firms in these regions.
Hope this helps
Valmik.
Hello Jigar,
Since your questions have become specific now I am forwarding your query to one of my friends who is in the Comp Science Department at Wayne State. I think he will be in a better position to answer your questions than me. Please feel free to ask him anything specific you want to know about WSU. I hope you appreciate that there are a lot of students writing to us during this time of the year and we are also busy with our midterms coming up. So I hope you will be very
specific in your questions. When I said that "Comp ......market" all I was directing it was towards Detroit area. I mean if you are choosing Wayne State because of Detroit then I just feel that for Comp Science the job market in Detroit is no different than any other place in the US. Valmik please correct me if I am wrong.
Thanks once again for writing to ISA - WSU and we hope that we were able to answer all your questions
to the best of our abilities.

Ankur

This is Ankur from the Indian Students Association.
I agree with Arka completely. In general RIT is a good school and if you funding of some sort then you should really go there. I think even if you get an admit from Wayne State the chances of funding are really minimal. I am not aware of your department, but this is a general statement. Also I do not understand what is the hurry. What do you mean when
you say is it worth waiting. What are you planning to do. I think you have to wait anyways. You should get an answer from WSU by the end of March definitely. But I would still prefer RIT. Comp Science is also not really known for a good job market.

Still the decision is your's. Good Luck .
Thanks, Ankur

Hello Sirisha

When you apply online it’s not necessary to complete all the details.  If you don’t fill the financial information, they will just send you a mail asking you for the unfilled information on your application form. You just fill the application with all the known information. And once you complete the admission form, mail those details to your sister here and then she can send your transcripts to university with the admission details. The university doesn’t care from where the documents are sent from.

The courses for fall 2005 will be posted in May after this winter semester is over, until then u wont get the details about fall 2005. The website to check the courses are www.classschedule.wayne.edu

One more thing, the scores of your GRE and your college is pretty good so apply to some good universities. Looking at your scores I m pretty sure that you can get into some top ranked universities. What is the specialty that you are looking for? Wayne State has a specialty in Engines and Heat Transfer and Materials. If you are looking for Design then it is not a good school to apply.

Please feel free to ask any University questions that you would like to know. Also we would encourage you to keep checking the website for more information. We are in the process of updating it and we will be doing as when we have more information.

Thanks,

Ankur

Hi Inderdeep,

Sorry for the late reply. The MBA studies tuition fees is  approximately$ 700 per credit hour for an international student and normally to finish an MBA program one has to complete approximately 40 credit hours. This does not include the living expenses.

As an international student you will be allowed to work for 20 hours on campus so you will be able to pay for your living expenses from that. Well whether it is worth it depends if you get a job. The job situation is not very good but if one gets a job then it can be recovered easily.

It is a lot of hard work so be prepared for it. And if you are applying for Fall 2005 check out the deadlines for application.

Wishing you all the very best in your decisions and feel free to write if you have any queries. I will be more than happy to reply.

Bye,

Kashmira.

Hi Anubhav,

The job scenario, frankly speaking is not that exciting , though it seems to be better than say a few years back. Jobs in Quality seem to be there up for grabs, but for international students it always is a stretch because of the prevailing H1 norms.
The Dept does not help in the placement of the students. Students have to look out for jobs themselves, and I'd say at the max. 1-2 out of 10 are lucky enough to find a company who directly hire them (i.e. sponsor their H1). Hope this helps. If you have any other specific questions you can always email me. Best of Luck

The fees are $6000 per semester and they increase by 10% every Fall. Atleast the fee increased for the last 2 years..I dont know what will happen next years. We do get campus job. There are many campus job available.
Living expenses are around $250($170rent + around $40 groceries) per month including rent and groceries. If you get funding you have to do research under the professor or be his teaching assistant. If you get that you get paid around $1000 per month. Please let me know if you need any more info.

Dear Julian,

Thanks for writing to ISA at Wayne State University.

I am not aware of the score as per the new system, but if you think it is low then I am assuming that it would be low. There are many things that are taken into account while offering admission. The GRE score is one important part of that but along with it your academics and the SOP also play an important role. I would recommend that you apply at Wayne State as the GRE score requirements are not extremely high here and a majority of students get admitted. Wayne State is a good school if you are interested in Automobiles. There are lots of courses related to engines and combustion technology and there is a fair amount of research in the field too.

So I think you should give it a try.

About the Universities that you asked about,

U of M, Dearborn is basically an extended campus of the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. Of course it is definitely not the same because of this. However it is good school.

Lawrence Tech. This is basically a technical type of school and I would personally not recommend a Master’s Degree from here.

Kettering University. This University was formed by GM. Again this is like a technical school and not much research goes on here.

However I would like to make one thing clear about all these Universities. They have a very good Automobile Engineering program and it is well known all over. Since these are technical schools do not expect any funding. If you have the money they may be better than Wayne State in learning about Automobiles, but for research activities WSU is far better.

Please feel free to ask any University related questions that you would like to know. Also we would encourage you to keep checking the website www.isa.wayne.edu for more information. We are in the process of updating it and we will be doing as and when we have more information.

Thanks,

Hello harsha:

This is Praveen whom Ankur referred to in his previous mail. You have a pretty decent score to get an admit into Wayne State Univ Electrical Dept. Since you want to pursue M.S in VLSI design, let me run you through the aid aspect and the course structure overall.

The aid scene is pretty dull in the department. The dept. will fund you only in If you give a commitment for a PhD. (This is what I have noticed in our dept.). As far as the R&D in the department, there is only one area namely Smart Sensors Technology that has some kind of work going on. (Again, aid is given to PhD students). This concentrates on MEMS and application specific sensor technologies. There are 2 courses in this area in which level 1 is an introduction and level 2 is advanced.

Other than these 2 courses, there are no other courses that will expose you to the hardcore aspects on VLSI design. There is another course on VHDL which is quite useful.

I would suggest you to research other schools and compare the courses that they offer. If possible, try to contact the professors for further help. Let me know if you need further help.

Praveen Ramteke

BTW I am from Pune too. What college are you from? I am from MIT. Anyway, to answer your questions.

I want to know what are admission criterias. what are the minimum gre and tofel scores?
For admission, they look primarily at the GRE score, your TOEFL score, your academic background and your interest of study. If they have something going on in the school in which you have some work experience then it helps too. There is no minimum criteria for GRE and TOEFL scores as far as admission goes. As I have already indicated it is a combined thing. You have to refer to the program requirements for minimum TOEFL requirements.

and how much is the cost of study including tuition fee and leaving expenses. How much is the application fee

The cost of study goes like this. You have to register for a minimum of 8 credit hours per semester and the approximate fees for this is 6000 dollars. For living expenses. It ranges from 150 to 300 dollars depending on what you choose to live in. The groceries is about 100 dollars per month and that’s about it. You will have to take health insurance which is around 300 dollars per semester. I am not sure of the application fee. You have to refer to the graduate school website for that.

and required and whether financial assistance is available at your university? I have keen interest in biochemical engineering.

The funding opportunities are very little. However it is available to the persistent and the smart few. But this is again very Department specific and you have to get in touch with professors to see who is working in your field and who has good enough projects. I am in the Mechanical Engineering department and do not know much about the Chemical Engineering department. But I am sure there is research going on in the biocompatible materials area in this department. I am forwarding this email to someone I know how is in the material science department and he will be able to answer your questions better.

Please feel free to ask any University related questions that you would like to know. Also we would encourage you to keep checking the website www.isa.wayne.edu for more information. We are in the process of updating it and we will be doing as and when we have more information.

Hi Kalyan,

The dept of Computer Science requirements can be found on the following link http://www.cs.wayne.edu/academics/admission_requirements.html

Your acads, TOEFL and GRE verbal score seem to be good but quantitative is a bit lesser then required which reduces your chances of getting an admit here.
However your SOP, recommendation letters and work experience also plays a major role in admission to a graduate course.

Hope this helps,
Best of Luck.

Valmik.

Dear Kalyan,

What University are you from? I am from Mechanical Engineering and shall be in a position to answer your questions. Looking at your GPA, I personally do not think that you should have any problems in getting into WSU. As far as the funding goes, I think it will be a good idea to write to some professor who is in your field of interest. The ME website is:

http://www.eng.wayne.edu/coe/main.cfm?location=161

Here you will find good information about the professor’s and their research interests. As far as funding goes, I think that for PhD students there is sufficient funding. I do not know any PhD student who is not with any funding. There is a lot of research going on in the materials field. However I do not know anybody in particular who is into Structural Fatigue research. You might have to write to professors and ask them.

Please feel free to ask any University questions that you would like to know. Also we would encourage you to keep checking the website www.isa.wayne.edu for more information. We are in the process of updating it and we will be doing as when we have more information.

Hi Ankur,

Well, i changed my major from Mech engg to comp engg .I was actually seeking a degree in comp sc. but couldnt do that bcause comp sc. program belongs to college of science. If anybody wants to change the major from one college to another one needs to reapply to that particular college and still has to take pre reqs whereas if u change major with in the same college (i did from mech to comp engg with in college of engg) u need not reapply u just need get a form signed by advisors of both departments. This case u sent me seems to be pretty different than mine. Still what i would suggest is that geetha can come to ece dept at wayne ...take exception in first sem for taking just one course(some cross listed course b/w comp engg and comp sc). then for fall 2004 she can move on to some better univ . (almost all good univs have comp engg, elec engg and comp sc as one dept ) so she wont have to get into the change of major thing plus she will be studying at a better place .

if u need more info please get back to me u can fwd this mail to geetha

wishing u a very happy new year
with best regards

Dear Karthik,
Greetings !!!!
It was nice of you to get in touch with us. We would try to answer all your questions as clearly as possible.

1. howz the college(quality of education & the Professors) ?

The college is good but definitely not the best in the US. You will have to contact someone from your department in order to know this because it differs department wise. I am in the Mechanical Engineering department and it is really good on the thermal side but not so good on the design side. I hope you are getting what I am trying to say here. In general it is a good school but you will have to get into the department to know whether there are good courses in your field of interest or not. One way to know about the courses is through http://classschedule.wayne.edu this will give a complete list of courses that were and will be offered in the semesters.

2. Funding Opportunities ?

Again this is very department specific. You need to get in touch with the professors who are working in your field of interest. You can find this from the department website.

3. location of college (safe area r not) ?

In general Detroit is not a very safe place to stay. You have to be a little careful and selective about things that you do. However Wayne State is pretty safe. There are some stray incidents of burglary, larceny and theft here and there. But please be advised that there are more than 1000 students (foreign / international) at Wayne state and they do live here and study. So I do not think so that it should be a point of consideration in selecting WSU for study.

4. how far is it from residential area ( means where u stay) & the means of transport ?

Most (about 90%) of the Indian students live on the on campus housing. It is the cheapest and safest option. There are many buildings and all are within a walkable distance from the University. So we generally walk to school. The place where I live is the farthest from the University and it is a 10 minute walk.

5. on-campus & off-campus jobs (available? if so near by r far ) ?

There are several on campus jobs available at Wayne State and I do not think so that you should have a problem in finding one. Off – campus jobs are also available, however it is illegal. But people do work off campus. However you will need a car for working off campus.

6. Internships ?

This is very field/department specific. Many students have got internships from Wayne state. One major company that hired last year was GE. But there was internship hiring from WSU. However let me just put down one thing here that most of these were through individual student effort and not because of the University.

Please feel free to ask us anything else that you would like to know and we would be glad to answer it for you. I will try to find someone from the Computer Engineering department for you.

Thanks,
Ankur

You have to refer to the website and find out what are the latest requirements as we had filled our applications about 2 years ago and things have changed since then. There is nice FAQ page:

http://www.gradschool.wayne.edu/future/intfaq.html

Please refer to all the links above and still if you have doubts then get in touch with anyone in the ME department by writing to them directly.

or in the Graduate School Admissions Office:

You can also refer to the Office of Graduate Admissions page and they have good information there.

Mr. Naik
I am an undergraduate student of mechanical engg. residing in India. I ve taken my GRE and have a score of 1230 out of 1600. I would like to persue my M.S.at Wayne State. Kindly guide me to the right procedure of applying or the concerned person (dealing with queries) as the university site is not very clear on the subject. Thank you.
